Hi Oliver, evaluating RM for MS Project (2K3) demo version and experiencing issue replacing "Link To Project" UNC path.
First create a new task containing the project link via:
- Insert->Project.
The embedded project link detail can then be reached by double clicking the embedded icon:
- Inserted Project Information->Advanced->Source Project->Link To Project
the source is in UNC format, though I have tried local system drive. Neither entries are changed. I select to search/replace Hyperlinks, OLE, Comments, Text, Header and Footer. The project files have been created with minimal content to test this feature.
Could this be due to trial version or 10% file limitation? I would like to know if RM for MS Project is able to make changes to the above setting.
Thanks.

Hi Jim
unfortunatelly we do not support changes of embeded objects in one Project's project. MS Project's object model is limited compared to other Office applications.
I will try to see is there anything what we can do but I am not optimist.

Hi again,
I was quickly scanning through Project and found that this is not really embeded object so maybe we can do something. I will let you know when I have something (do not expect today, but most likely on Monday).

Hi Oliver, still some bugs perhaps. How did your test results compare:
- Hyperlinks AND Text checkboxes must be selected (not just Hyperlinks, as instructed) for search & replace to detect embedded project link,
- Replace function breaks the link to the embedded project file, changing the embedded project task to a simple textual task description. Task name is preserved but link no longer exists, neither does LinkToProject under the task's ADVANCED tab.
When opening the changed task, the window title changed from "Inserted Project Information" to "Task Information"

Hi Jim,
strange. I downloaded same version that you have, then I created 3 project files where in one of them I included other two files. Then I copied two included files in folder called Sub.
I started ReplaceMagic found three project files in "master" folder and said that I want to make replacement where I will add "Sub" folder and run replacement.
At the end those two projects were referenced to sub folder and in my first project file I still had real link to project files (ok, this time in sub folder).
Are your test project files also confident? Can you try with my example? I am confused because it looks like that it works but on the other side you have problem.
Thanks in advance, Oliver

Yeh strange. Could this be the excel bug all over again? I moved my files from a network share to local drive, and I cannot get the change to commit. There is definitely something wrong. Unfortunately I am running out of evaluation time to debug, this will likely be the last attempt. My settings are as follows: - Search & Replace option selected. - Search for HYPERLINK and TEXT checkboxes checked. All Others NOT CHECKED. ===================== Process started on: 2/4/2008 1:33:49 PM Search for: 'c:\temp\proj1.mpp' Replace with: 'c:\temp\subfolder\proj1.mpp' Match case: 'False' • Starting to scan folders for files!NewProject.mpp (0, 0) • Proj1.mpp (0, 0) • Updating links in 'C:\temp\NewProject.mpp'. • Updating hyperlinks... • The file is updated (1). • Updating links to OLE objects... • No update(s) in this file. • Updating text in document... • No update(s) in this file. Process sucessfully finished on: 2/4/2008 1:33:53 PM Made: 1 changes. Duration: 4 Seconds. You have reached 10% of files limit that we have in trial version. To work in trial mode close application and start it again. If you want to use application without limitations please go to www.replacemagic.com and buy it. ================== The Search & Replace update report is as follows: C:\temp\Proj1.mpp,"c:\temp\subfolder\proj1.mpp","Hyperlink","C:\temp\NewProject.mpp" As a last attempt, please send me your exact procedure to get this to work. For example, when you insert another project do you click INSERT->PROJECT or INSERT->HYPERLINK? I am inserting using the INSERT->PROJECT method.

In addition, this would appear to be linked somehow to the file name. If the file name stays the same, nothing happens, the link is not updated.
If the filename is changed e.g.
C:\TEMP\PROJ1.MPP to be changed to C:\TEMP\SUBFOLDER\PROJ2.MPP then the link to the project file is completely broken, as I mentioned in an earlier post.
Thank for all your help but I think after this we'll call it a day.
Regards, Jim

Thanks Oliver. Unfortunately I cannot provide any more time to test/debug. Hopefully the next release will provide the solution.
Thanks again for all your efforts. Jim

Is it possible to use office/project find&replace method to look in 'Subproject File' field and make necessary change? Is this what you do now?

We are currently work that when you open "master" project file you can change links to "sub"project but it will not be possible to jump in subproject and make changes there also.
For this you will need to select folder where subproject is and RM wil make changes there also.

I agree, master is sufficient. I just provided the field that worked for me when I changed one embedded project manually.
Any outlook on being able to provide a pre-release level to test?

Hi Jim,
I have bad news concerning sub projects. In my opinion there is a bug in Project and it is exactly that what you noticed. When you want to replace one file (for example - subprj2.mpp) with other file (same name) but in some other folder it will not work.
Unfortunately we could not go over this limitation and as I tried to make manual change in MS Project and it did not work I can only conclude that this is bug in Project.
Btw. I made double click on sub project in master project file and then I went to tab where link to sub project is and made change by choosing same file but in some other folder. After doing this I clicked on OK and then again double click on sub project and original file was still there.
Sorry but there is nothing what we can do :-(.
Regards, Oliver
