What SmartMapper does
SmartMapper is the migration-intelligence component of ReplaceMagic. It reads the results of a ReplaceMagic scan, applies the mapping rules you define, and produces the exact Search/Replace keys that ReplaceMagic uses to automatically repair links inside your documents.
When content moves – from a file share to SharePoint, from one SharePoint tenant to another, from an on-premises portal to Microsoft 365 – every link stored inside your documents keeps pointing at the old location. Hyperlinks, OLE objects, Excel external references, PivotTable sources, Power Query formulas and connection strings all break.
SmartMapper answers one question for every link found by the scan:
“This link points to the old location. Where should it point after the migration?”
It resolves each link to a full, unambiguous address, applies your mapping rules, and writes the result as a Search/Replace pair. ReplaceMagic then applies those pairs to the documents.
The complete workflow

Tool |
What happens |
|
1 |
ReplaceMagic Scanner |
Scans your documents, records every link and every document |
|
2 |
You |
Define mapping rules: old location → new location |
|
3 |
SmartMapper |
Resolves links, applies rules, generates Search/Replace keys |
|
4 |
You |
Review the results and the coverage report |
|
5 |
ReplaceMagic |
Applies the keys to the documents |
SmartMapper functionality never modifies your documents. It only reads scan data and writes keys to the database. Nothing is changed in a file until you run the replacement in ReplaceMagic.
