SharePoint Version and Authentication Mode Selection

When connecting ReplaceMagic to SharePoint, selecting the correct version target ensures the right API and authentication method is used. An incorrect selection is one of the most common reasons for connection failures.

With native integration between ReplaceMagic and SharePoint you can connect to your SharePoint 2013, 2016 (2010 in beta mode) but also to SharePoint.Online (O365) sites.
When you go to form where you can add your SharePoint site simply select appropriate authentication mode

SharePoint authentication in ReplaceMagic

Like name "SharePoint Online (Office365)" says this mode is to connection to Online version of SharePoint. All other modes are for SharePoint On-Premise versions.

Most used authentication modes:

  • Windows Authentication (NTML or Kerberos) - mainly for on premise versions of SharePoint 2019/2016/2013/2010
  • SharePoint Online - like name says to be used when you want to process broken links in SharePoint Online
  • Web Logon - to be checked when you have SharePoint Multi Factor Authentication and/or you disabled SharePoint Legacy Authentication Mode
  • App only - if you want you can create SharePoint App-only credentials for ReplaceMagic run. You can either check ReplaceMagic help or Google Microsoft articles

Step-by-Step Version Selection

  1. Open the SharePoint connection dialog (Scan Documents tab → SharePoint icon)
  2. Enter your SharePoint site URL
  3. In the authentication mode dropdown, select the mode that matches your environment (see table below)
  4. Enter credentials and click Connect
  5. If the tree view appears, the version selection is correct

Authentication Mode by Environment

  • SharePoint Online / Microsoft 365: select "SharePoint Online (Office 365)"
→ Enables modern auth, MFA support, SharePoint Online API
  • SharePoint on-premises (Windows domain): select "Windows Authentication"
→ Uses NTLM or Kerberos via domain credentials
  • SharePoint on-premises (no domain / federated): select "Web Logon"
→ Opens a browser window for interactive login
  • Any environment where legacy auth is disabled: select "App-Only Authentication"
→ Certificate-based, no user credentials needed

What Changes Based on Version Selection

  • The API used to connect to SharePoint (REST, CSOM)
  • Which metadata fields can be preserved (last-modified date, author)
  • Which check-in/check-out options are available
  • How throttling is managed

Troubleshooting Wrong Version Selection

  • If you see a login error despite correct credentials: try a different authentication mode
  • If the tree view shows no sites: your account may lack permissions, or the URL format is wrong
  • SharePoint Online URLs always contain .sharepoint.com; on-premises URLs are typically your internal server name
  • Contact support@replacemagic.com if you cannot identify the correct mode for your environment
